Chicago Bears general manager Ryan Poles traded two first-round draft picks to the Tennessee Titans for defensive tackle Jeffery Simmons on Thursday. The transaction marks a decisive break from the conservative, draft-heavy approach Poles employed during his first two years in the role.

Poles acknowledged on Friday that the team was prepared for the cost. He stated, "F- them picks is a big thing. That's really not what we're about." While he maintained a commitment to young talent as the foundation for long-term success, he identified a specific window of opportunity where the Bears could compete for a championship in the next two seasons.

The decision followed a year of speculation and a period of internal re-evaluation. Poles noted that he had called Titans general manager Mike Borgonzi about Simmons previously, but the answer was consistently no. The trade was finalized after a phone call late Wednesday, with the Titans confirming the decision in the morning.

Poles cited the strength of the Bears' existing roster as the primary driver for the aggressive move. The team, led by quarterback Caleb Williams and head coach Ben Johnson, won the NFC North last season and has developed into a top-10 offense through the first seven weeks of the current campaign.

He argued that recent Super Bowl champions have all possessed a high-level defensive tackle capable of disrupting opposing offenses. Poles listed Fletcher Cox, Aaron Donald, Chris Jones, Vita Vea, Jalen Carter, and Leonard Williams as examples of the type of player he sought to acquire.

The Bears have not featured a dominant interior lineman since Akiem Hicks, who played for the team in 2018. Poles described Simmons as a player who impacts both the on-field performance and the locker room culture. He said, "You do this type of move when you have a combination of impact player on the grass as well as someone who can impact your culture."

Poles contrasted the current moment with his first season as general manager, when the Bears finished 3-14. He said the team is now in a space where it is chasing championships rather than trying to get off the ground. The trade was intended to solidify that position before the season continues.

The Bears will now turn their attention to preparing for a game against Seattle. Poles said the acquisition provided a boost to the team's energy, describing it as "a shot in the arm" before the players refocused on their upcoming schedule.
