A closed restaurant featured in an artificial intelligence itinerary for Oahu exposed a growing vulnerability in Hawaii's tourism sector. The traveler asked ChatGPT to create a 10-day plan. The bot listed the restaurant despite it having been shut for six months. This error illustrates how businesses risk disappearing from digital discovery if their online data is not precise.

Tourism operators are now treating website maintenance as a critical operational task. AI assistants rely on current, accessible online information to generate recommendations. Hotels and activity providers must constantly remove outdated pages and verify that hours and prices are accurate. If the data is stale, the AI will not include the business in a traveler's conversation.

Patrick Ahler, senior vice president at Castle Resorts and Hotels, described updating websites as a competitive requirement. The company recently rebuilt its website using AI to support a universal booking system. This system serves its 20 properties across Hawaii, New Zealand, and Nevada. The new structure allows the brand to be identified by AI search tools.

Ahler said the rebuild focused specifically on AI-assisted travel research. The site now provides structured facts about locations, rooms, and amenities. It organizes information to answer the specific questions travelers ask. This approach ensures the data is readable by both humans and automated planning tools.

The shift marks a move beyond traditional search engine optimization. Businesses must now optimize for conversational AI interfaces. The goal is to provide clear, factual answers that an algorithm can easily extract and present to a user.
