Manchester City advanced to the English League Cup quarterfinals after defeating Brighton 4-3 in a penalty shootout at the Etihad Stadium. The result preserved City’s bid to retain the trophy following a dramatic 2-2 draw in regular time. Backup goalkeeper Geronimo Rulli saved the final two spot kicks from Yasin Ayari and Lewis Dunk to secure the victory.
The match followed a turbulent week for the club. On Saturday, City lost to Aston Villa, a defeat that ended their 100 percent start to the Premier League season. Manager Enzo Maresca responded by making nine changes to the starting lineup for the cup tie. Key players including Erling Haaland, Ruben Dias, Elliot Anderson, and Gianluigi Donnarumma were rested on the bench.
Brighton opened the scoring in the 30th minute when Malick Yalcouye converted a chance created by Georginio Rutter. The striker tapped the ball past Rulli from five yards out. City equalized 20 minutes later. Mateo Kovacic curled a shot from 25 yards into the far corner to level the match at 1-1.
Brighton regained the lead just two minutes after the restart. Georginio Rutter scored again, finishing a cut-back from Jaouen Hadjam. The game remained tight until the 72nd minute. Vitor Reis deflected in a free kick from Rayan Cherki to restore parity, sending the contest to extra time and then penalties.
The shootout began with a setback for City when Jason Steele saved Kovacic’s attempt. Rulli then stabilized the situation by denying Ayari and Dunk. The win positions City to face third-tier Bradford City in the next round. The two teams are also scheduled to meet again in the Premier League at the Etihad Stadium this coming Saturday.
Other quarterfinal matchups have been finalized. Bournemouth advanced with a 3-0 victory over Aston Villa, extending a recent winning streak that included defeats of AC Milan and Manchester United. Crystal Palace beat Fulham 1-0 to secure a home date against Sunderland. Fleetwood Town, a fourth-tier side, eliminated Premier League champions Arsenal in a Tuesday penalty shootout and will face the winner of the upcoming Everton versus Newcastle match. Liverpool will host Bournemouth in the other quarterfinal tie.
