Thomas Wayne Markle, the 82-year-old father of Megan Markle, stood in a Tampa courtroom on Thursday to face a federal charge of possessing child pornography. The man, who resides in Lakeland, Florida, was arrested and booked on one count, marking the formal start of his criminal case.
The investigation began in October when FBI agents received information from a witness. Agents said the tip suggested Markle rented storage units in California that might hold illegal material. Following a secured search warrant, federal officers raided the units and confiscated a total of 78 items.
The seized evidence included slides, books, and 35mm film negatives registered to Markle. Officials stated the negatives appeared to contain child pornography. Bill Essayli, the First Assistant United States Attorney, described the specific nature of the charges during court proceedings.
“Mr. Markle is accused of possessing child sexual abuse material, including photographs depicting himself with minor girls,” Essayli told reporters. The prosecutor added that the allegations were extremely serious and pledged to prosecute the case to the fullest extent of federal law.
Markle’s initial appearance took place in the United States District Court for the Middle District of Florida. While he is currently in Florida, the ongoing investigation remains under the jurisdiction of the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Central California.
If a jury or judge finds Markle guilty of the single charge, he could face a maximum prison sentence of 20 years. The case is still active as federal agents continue their review of the seized materials.
