A security officer in Jordan died after an assailant struck him with a sharp object near the Sri Lankan Embassy in Amman on Thursday. Jordanian authorities have classified the incident as a terrorist act and arrested the suspect.
The Public Security Directorate stated that the officer was assaulted while on duty. A preliminary investigation found that the attacker planned the operation specifically against personnel from the General Security Directorate. The department described the killing as a cowardly terrorist attack.
State-run Al-Mamlaka TV reported that the suspect tried to grab the deceased officer's weapon. A second security officer stepped in to help. Both the assailant and the second officer sustained injuries during the struggle. The Sri Lankan Embassy confirmed the attack occurred in its vicinity but did not provide further details.
Government spokesperson Mohamed al-Momani said on X that the prime minister is closely monitoring the security services' response. Al-Momani characterized the attack on working security personnel as an assault on the dignity of the state.
This incident follows a series of violent events in Jordan. Weeks earlier, gunmen opened fire during a funeral at a church in southern Jordan. That attack killed nine people and wounded dozens of others.
