Detroit Red Wings interim general manager Shawn Horcoff suspended center Dylan Larkin on Thursday after the former captain refused to report to practice. Larkin, a six-time 30-goal scorer, has been on a team-friendly contract for five years including the current season at an $8.7 million average annual salary. The suspension marks the end of a five-month standoff that began when Larkin requested a trade.

Larkin’s agent, Pat Brisson, called Horcoff on Thursday to confirm the player would not come to the rink. Larkin stated he no longer wanted to play for Detroit. Horcoff said the team had worked extensively with Larkin’s agency, CAA, to find a solution. He noted that they have spoken with the teams on Larkin’s approved list and received calls from other interested clubs.

The center’s list of acceptable destinations includes Carolina, Colorado, Dallas, Florida, Minnesota, New Jersey, Tampa Bay, Utah, Vegas, and Washington. Montreal has expressed strong interest, but Larkin has not included any Canadian-based clubs in his waiver list. Horcoff hopes Larkin will expand the list, as adding certain teams would make reaching a deal easier. The Red Wings are trying to balance immediate roster needs with long-term organizational success.

Horcoff said he is prepared to wait as long as necessary to secure a good return. He described Larkin as a major part of the team’s long-term plans. Removing such a player makes replacement difficult. The general manager stated the goal is to acquire players who can help immediately while ensuring the deal fits the franchise’s future. He emphasized that the return must be fair for someone of Larkin’s caliber.

Larkin had hoped to accelerate the trade process. The Red Wings are determined to get a fair return. Horcoff said he was surprised by the suspension decision this morning. He observed that Larkin appeared frustrated during recent days and a road trip. The general manager had hoped the center would rescind his trade request. He admitted that keeping Larkin in a Red Wings jersey was unsuccessful.

Players learned of the suspension primarily through social media. Horcoff planned to speak with the team that night. He praised the leadership group for handling outside noise. The players have dealt with a lot of external pressure since the trade request became public. Horcoff said the leadership group has grown substantially since the start of the year. The team continues to evaluate potential trade partners.

The suspension takes effect immediately. Larkin will be paid under his contract while on the suspension list. The Red Wings will continue to field offers from teams on the waiver list. Horcoff said he remains open to different kinds of deals. The organization is focused on finding a solution that fits both sides. The trade process remains active as teams weigh their options.
