Gotham FC claimed their first NWSL Shield on Sunday following a 2-0 victory over the Utah Royals at Sports Illustrated Stadium in Harrison, New Jersey. The win secured the regular season title for the New York club, ending a race with the San Diego Wave.

Goalkeeper Ann-Katrin Berger addressed the team's performance after the final whistle. She noted that the trophy reflects the quality of the squad, especially considering they won the previous year's championship as the lowest ranked team in the playoffs. Berger stated that the team did not perform to its potential last season and that the current roster should be the league standard.

"We didn't perform last season as well as we should," Berger told reporters. "Because we have the squad that should be on top of the league. I'm not saying that we have to win every single year, but I think now, where we are, that should be our standard with the squad that we have."

The New York club needed only a draw to claim the Shield, but they secured two goals to ensure the win. Guro Reiten opened the scoring early in the match, while Jaedyn Shaw added a late goal to seal the result. The San Diego Wave also won their match on Sunday but finished three points behind Gotham in the final standings.

Gotham is the seventh different franchise to win the NWSL Shield in the league's history. The team has won two of the last three NWSL Championships, though they achieved those titles as the lowest seed in the postseason. Last year, they entered the playoffs as the No. 8 seed and defeated the Shield winning Kansas City Current in the quarterfinals en route to the title.

Coach Juan Carlos Amoros noted that his team currently holds all three major NWSL trophies. The Shield joins the NWSL Challenge Cup won in June and the 2025 NWSL Championship. Amoros described the league as the hardest in the world to win, regardless of what people say.

Defender and co-captain Tierna Davidson expressed pride in the group's resilience. She pointed out that the team has played in many countries this season, including the inaugural FIFA Women's Champions Cup in England and the 2026 Concacaf semifinal in May. Davidson said it has been a very long year since preseason started on January 2, but every player contributed to reaching this point.

Gotham has played more games than any other NWSL team this season. Sunday's match marked their 18th victory of the year, a new club record. The team has made the playoffs in all four seasons under head coach Amoros, winning championships in 2023 and 2025.

The quarterfinals begin on November 8, with Gotham hosting Seattle Reign FC at 12 p.m. ET on ABC. Seattle earned the final playoff spot as the eighth seed with a 1-0 win over the Orlando Pride. The winner of the Gotham and Seattle match will face the winner of the No. 4 versus No. 5 matchup between the Kansas City Current and Angel City FC.

The No. 2 seed San Diego Wave will host the seventh seeded Utah Royals on Friday. The No. 3 seed Washington Spirit will host the No. 6 seed Portland Thorns on Sunday at 3 p.m. ET on ABC. The NWSL Championship is scheduled for Saturday, November 21, at Audi Field in Washington, D.C.
