High school volleyball in Alabama reached its Class 5A state semifinals on Wednesday, with two teams competing at the Birmingham CrossPlex. Mountain Brook High School secured its place in the final four by defeating Pike Road in the quarterfinal round. The Spartans advanced as the North No. 2 seed after a three-game sweep of their opponents. The match ended with scores of 25-18, 25-15, and 25-15 in favor of Mountain Brook.
In that quarterfinal contest, player Adele Moffatt recorded 13 kills for the team. Lucy Comer contributed 10 kills and six digs to the effort. Setter Sullivan Todd provided 22 assists and four kills, while Mae Mae King added four kills and two blocks. The performance moved the Spartans into the semifinal match against Spanish Fort, the two-time defending champion.
The semifinal against Spanish Fort proved more competitive than their earlier meeting. The teams faced off on the same court where they had last played during the season opener on August 20. At that time, Spanish Fort had defeated Mountain Brook in straight sets. Wednesday’s matchup saw the Spartans push the champion to a longer battle before the final whistle.
Spanish Fort won the match 3-1, with set scores of 25-18, 25-23, 19-25, and 25-17. The second set was particularly close, ending with a two-point margin. Mountain Brook managed to win the third set 25-19, but could not sustain that momentum. The result concluded the Spartans' campaign in the state tournament.
Individual statistics in the semifinal showed continued strong play from key contributors. Moffatt had 12 kills and three blocks during the match against Spanish Fort. Todd recorded 20 assists and three kills, while Grace Ann Lloyd added 12 kills to the offensive total. These performances highlighted the team’s competitive edge in the final stages of their season.
This state run follows a season that included winning the Class 5A Area 10 title. The team also claimed a sub-regional victory over St. Clair County. They advanced to the North Super Regional final, where they defeated East Limestone 3-0 and Southside 3-1. The Spartans fell to Jasper 3-0 in that final to cap their regional run before the state tournament.
Spanish Fort will face Jasper in the Class 5A championship match. The game is scheduled for 10 a.m. Thursday at Bill Harris Arena. Mountain Brook finishes its season with a 43-7 record.
