Lakesha Womack, the Democratic candidate for North Carolina’s 14th Congressional District, received a felony warrant while at a campaign event on October 11. Polk County Sheriff’s Office deputies served the 49-year-old during the gathering.
The warrant dates back to January 2020. It charges Womack with failing to return a hired motor vehicle valued at more than $4,000. The original incident involved a 2019 Toyota Corolla rented from Budget Car Rental in October 2019. The car was worth approximately $20,000 at the time. Womack did not return the vehicle by the agreed-upon date.
It is not yet clear why the warrant went unserved for six years. Womack’s campaign released a statement acknowledging the media attention surrounding the case. The statement did not directly address the felony charge but focused on attack ads from the Friends of Tim Moore. “Over the past few weeks, allegations involving me have drawn significant media attention and attack ads from Friends of Tim Moore,” the statement read. The campaign added that voters deserve transparency and that candidates should be evaluated by consistent standards, including their record of public service.
Womack is challenging Republican incumbent Rep. Tim Moore for the seat. The district covers Gastonia, Shelby, Morgantown, and parts of far south Charlotte. The midterm general election is scheduled for November 3.
