Nikita Kucherov has requested a trade from the Tampa Bay Lightning, ending his tenure with the franchise that he has led to multiple championships. The move was confirmed by a person with knowledge of the situation who spoke to The Associated Press on Friday. The source noted that the discussions are private, which is why they did not wish to be named publicly.

Kucherov, 33, is set to become an unrestricted free agent at the conclusion of the current season. This status follows the expiration of an eight-year, $76 million contract he signed in 2018. During that period, he helped Tampa Bay win two Stanley Cups, led the league in scoring three times, and earned the Hart Trophy as the league's most valuable player in 2018-19 and 2025-26.

General Manager Julien BriseBois had previously expressed confidence in extending Kucherov's stay with the team. In mid-September, BriseBois told reporters that the objective was to secure a new deal that would keep the winger around for years. He stated that he and Kucherov's agent, Dan Milstein, had maintained open lines of communication to achieve that goal. BriseBois said at the time that he believed Kucherov would remain an elite player well into his 30s.

The request for a trade places Kucherov in a line of recent high-profile movements across the league. Other players who have sought or completed trades in recent months include Brady Tkachuk, Connor Hellebuyck, and Dylan Larkin. Unlike those players, Kucherov has less time remaining on his current deal, creating immediate uncertainty for a team that has been a perennial contender since the salary cap era began in 2005.

Kucherov's statistical record with Tampa Bay is extensive. He has accumulated 1,139 points in 891 regular-season games since his debut in 2013. That total ranks third all-time behind Connor McDavid and Nathan MacKinnon. His 177 playoff points are the most during that span. He became the franchise's career points leader last weekend by passing former captain Steven Stamkos.

The Lightning have made the playoffs 12 times in the last 13 seasons. They reached the final round four times with Kucherov and Victor Hedman as core players. However, the team has been eliminated in the first round in each of the past four years. The Lightning did not immediately return a message seeking comment on the development.
