One person died and at least eight others were injured in a shooting Saturday evening near the Magic City Classic in Birmingham, Alabama, police said. Officers arrived at the 400 block of Graymont Avenue at about 7:50 p.m. and halted tailgating in the surrounding area, the Birmingham Police Department reported. Multiple firearms were recovered from the scene, and one person was detained and brought to police headquarters for questioning.
The Magic City Classic is the largest historically Black college and university football game in the United States. By early Sunday, police said one victim was in critical condition and seven others were in stable condition. No officers or first responders were hurt.
Birmingham Police Chief Michael Pickett called the shooting a "senseless act of violence." He said the city's largest annual event strains department resources, and that other law enforcement leaders quickly offered assistance. Pickett described officers running toward the gunfire, triaging people as they moved in that direction, and rendering aid to the injured. "Our Birmingham police officer are true heroes," Pickett said. He added that all officers and assisting personnel were able to go home to their families.
Police have not released the names of the person who died or the injured, and no charges have been announced.
