The Department of Defense has requested a $1.5 trillion budget from Congress, a figure that has become a central point of contention for Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth.

Hegseth appeared in a nearly six-minute video recorded outside the Pentagon on Thursday. He defended the ongoing conflict with Iran and his performance as the nation's top military officer. The administration released the footage as part of a coordinated messaging campaign. This push followed the Republican Party's loss of control of Congress in the recent midterm elections. Trump and Vice President JD Vance have linked that electoral defeat directly to the war effort.

Hegseth stated that the United States intends to ensure Iran does not acquire a nuclear weapon. He described the conflict as a courageous and historic effort under President Trump's leadership. He urged lawmakers to approve funding in the coming weeks to keep the United States ahead of its adversaries. The official White House account on X and political appointees at the Pentagon supported the video. Their posts carried the slogan, Stand. Fight. Defend the Republic.

President Trump voiced his support for Hegseth during a press conference in the Oval Office on Thursday afternoon. He called the defense secretary's work a fantastic job. Trump cited a reduction in the number of generals during Hegseth's tenure as a positive outcome. He noted that many of those removed were woke, a trait he dislikes in military leadership.

An impeachment effort led by Rep. Thomas Massie, a Republican from Kentucky, could reach a vote in the House as soon as next week. Hegseth criticized Massie in his video, calling him a disgruntled and defeated congressman. Hegseth argued that Massie was pursuing political theater disguised as power. Hegseth's chief spokesman, Sean Parnell, said his team is assembling the most aggressive defense of the secretary ever created.

Democrats have vowed to investigate the defense secretary when they take power in January. They plan to scrutinize the Iran war, which began more than eight months ago without congressional consent. They also intend to review military strikes on alleged drug traffickers and the firing of numerous military leaders. The conflict began in February in concert with Israel. Iran closed the Strait of Hormuz in response, which caused gasoline prices to soar globally.

Sen. Marsha Blackburn, a Republican from Tennessee, won an election on Tuesday to become the next governor of her state. She is not considering selecting Hegseth to fill the remainder of her Senate term. Hegseth owns a home in Tennessee, which had fueled speculation about a potential soft landing. He is not interested in the role, according to a person familiar with his thinking.
