Man arrested after failed abduction at Honolulu condo

Honolulu police arrested a man after a kidnapping attempt at the Kainalu condominiums on Coconut Avenue. The incident occurred around noon on Monday and was captured on surveillance video.

The Kainalu complex is located in the Diamond Head Gold Coast area. Authorities responded to a report of a kidnapping shortly after the midday hour. Security footage from that afternoon showed a truck parked outside the complex prior to the event.

Video recorded by the building shows a man entering the garage where two women were present. The suspect confronted the pair and began chasing one of them. A 77-year-old resident, who asked not to be identified, stated that the man picked up her 24-year-old friend during the struggle.

Police reported that the suspect elbowed the 77-year-old woman in the face during the encounter. The resident described the moment, saying, "He shoved me away from my friend and he picked her up." She added that he appeared to have intense hatred in his eyes while the women called for help.

Witnesses from neighboring units observed the man bear-hugging the 24-year-old and dragging her toward the rear of his vehicle. Beverly Louis, a neighbor, said she screamed at him to release the woman. Mike Finkelstein, another resident, yelled that he had called the police and was on his way down.

Several neighbors rushed to the scene after hearing the commotion. Their intervention allowed the 24-year-old woman to break free from the suspect's grip. The man then jumped into his truck and drove away from the location.

Police detained the suspect a few hours after the incident. Officers located him after witnesses reported seeing a naked man matching his description running through a nearby neighborhood. The 77-year-old resident thanked her neighbors for stepping in. She and her friend continue to experience nightmares from the event.
