Moorhead became the site for the final campaign stops of two prominent Republican candidates on Thursday, October 29. Michele Tafoya, running for U.S. Senate, and Lisa Demuth, the candidate for governor, both visited the city within hours of each other. The timing marked the end of Demuth’s tour of northern Minnesota and a key moment in the closing days of the election.

Demuth, who serves as Speaker of the Minnesota House, addressed supporters at the Minnesota Republican Party office in Clay County. She was accompanied by her running mate, Ryan Wilson. The pair outlined their platform, focusing on reducing fraud, reforming education, and lowering vehicle tab costs. Demuth argued that reducing these costs would allow residents to keep more of their income while reinvesting in infrastructure.

"By scaling that back, allowing people to keep more of their hard-earned money and invest it differently, and then opening up our business economy, that opens up our tax base and provides what is needed without overtaxing the same Minnesotans," Demuth said. She emphasized the importance of connecting with voters across the state to ensure every vote is counted.

About an hour before Demuth arrived, Tafoya met with local business leaders at DS Beverages. Tafoya focused on reducing regulatory burdens to help companies grow. She stated a desire to eliminate duplicative rules and scale back tariffs. Her comments targeted the state’s approach to business expansion and the handling of fraud.

"I really want us to focus on how we can (get) rid of this duplicative, regulatory rules, so that businesses can have more freedom to grow and just be unleashed to do what they do best," Tafoya said. She described the Republican ticket as strong and confident, referencing the record of the previous eight years under Tim Walz and Peggy Flanagan.

Demuth faces Democratic Senator Amy Klobuchar in the governor’s race. Tafoya is opposed by Lieutenant Governor Peggy Flanagan in the Senate contest. The Democratic Party is currently conducting its own bus tour to mobilize voters.

The DFL tour is scheduled to make stops in Moorhead, Fergus Falls, and Mahnomen on Saturday, October 31.
