The Seattle Seahawks have made their biggest pre-trade deadline addition in three straight seasons, acquiring Quenton Nelson, the best guard in football. The trade cost general manager John Schneider a 2027 third-round pick and a 2028 fifth-round pick, but the Seahawks likely have four compensatory draft picks coming from free agents lost last offseason. Nelson, 30, has eight seasons and 136 games of experience, and his contract is set to expire, but he will instantly improve the Seahawks rushing attack, which ranks 17th in the NFL in yards per game (113.7) and 23rd in yards per carry (3.9). He will provide a cleaner pocket for quarterback Sam Darnold, who has surrendered a league-leading eight interceptions in just six games.
The Seahawks did not decline to pay reigning Super Bowl MVP Kenneth Walker III last offseason just to pull a panic trade for an aging, occasionally injured tailback seven games later. They did not draft first-round running back Jadarian Price, intending to pair him with reliable rusher Zach Charbonnet, just to abandon that plan because of two fumbles and an unfortunate chest injury. The Seahawks have acquired key pieces with expiring contracts before the trade deadline in three straight seasons. In 2023, it was defensive tackle Leonard Williams. In 2024, it was linebacker Ernest Jones IV. In 2025, it was wide receiver and returner Rashid Shaheed. All three ultimately re-signed with Seattle.
Nelson will provide a cleaner pocket for quarterback Sam Darnold, who has surrendered a league-leading eight interceptions in just six games. He will help stabilize the left side of a line that could miss starting left tackle Charles Cross for multiple weeks with a reported high ankle sprain. Given the defensive dominance, the Seahawks’ primary offensive objective should be to control clock and avoid implosions. By bolstering the running game and pass protection, Nelson will positively impact both departments.
