The United Nations requested an independent and thorough investigation into the death of a human rights staffer held by Yemen's Houthi authorities. Volker Turk, the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, issued the demand on Saturday regarding the fate of Mohammad el-Shami. The OHCHR employee died more than a month ago, yet his family received the news only recently.

Houthi officials have not explained how el-Shami died. Turk stated that the family deserves to know the truth. He called for full transparency from the Houthi authorities and an urgent inquiry into the circumstances surrounding the death. The human rights chief emphasized the need for a clear account of the events that led to the staffer's passing.

El-Shami was detained in June 2024. He was among more than 60 individuals working for the UN and other non-governmental organizations who were taken into custody. The Houthis accused the group of participating in an American-Israeli spy network. This incident marked a significant escalation in tensions between the rebel group and international aid agencies operating in Yemen.

Turk expressed grave concern for seven other OHCHR personnel who remain in Houthi detention. He appealed for their immediate and unconditional release. The High Commissioner linked the ongoing detention to the need for clarity on el-Shami's death. The group has previously shown some detainees on television, describing them as collaborators with Western intelligence services and Israel.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres issued a separate statement on Saturday. He described himself as appalled by the death of el-Shami. Guterres echoed Turk's calls for an investigation. The UN is currently seeking answers from the Houthi group regarding the specific conditions that led to the death.

El-Shami is the second UN staff member to die while in Houthi custody. A World Food Programme employee died in February 2025 under similar circumstances. A total of 72 UN staffers and NGO workers have been detained by the Houthis. The UN paused operations in parts of Houthi-held Yemen in February 2025 due to safety concerns for its employees.

On October 6, the UN announced that a World Food Programme employee was released. The staffer had been arbitrarily detained by the Iran-backed group. The release followed a period of heightened concern over the welfare of international staff in the region. The Houthi group has not indicated when the remaining detainees will be freed.
