The Formula One championship battle tightened further on Sunday as Kimi Antonelli secured his ninth win of the season at the Circuit of the Americas in Austin, Texas.

Antonelli, 20, started from pole position and crossed the finish line in 1:35:16.650. Charles Leclerc of Monaco finished second, 13.078 seconds behind the winner. Max Verstappen of Red Bull Racing took third place, 17.485 seconds back. Verstappen, who won titles from 2021 to 2024, is now mathematically eliminated from the championship race. He noted that tire selection and overall pace hindered his results, adding that a late Virtual Safety Car likely aided his podium finish.

The race strategy determined the outcome over 56 laps. Antonelli executed a single pit stop on Lap 25, while rival teams opted for two stops. He credited his team for trusting the one-stop plan, calling it an incredible team effort. A Virtual Safety Car triggered on Lap 52 when Valtteri Bottas's Cadillac stopped on track. The car remained in effect until the penultimate lap, preventing any late surge against Antonelli.

Antonelli's lead over Mercedes teammate George Russell has grown to 123 points with five races left. Russell must win the next race in Mexico City to keep his title hopes alive. If Russell does not win, Antonelli will clinch the championship. Mercedes also extended its constructors' lead over Ferrari to 133 points, with Mercedes at 607 points and Ferrari at 474.

Team principal Toto Wolff praised Antonelli's performance, describing it as the best race the driver has produced. Wolff said Antonelli controlled the race despite starting with inferior tires, noting the driver outperformed the car. Antonelli agreed, stating that while his Monza win was special, Sunday's execution was superior due to the team's performance build-up.

Antonelli has won both United States races on this year's calendar, including a victory in Miami earlier in the season. He remains focused on finishing the year strongly before entering the 2027 season. The Las Vegas Grand Prix is scheduled for November.
