Giants weigh cost of reuniting with Saquon Barkley
New York sits atop the NFC East but faces a dilemma over whether to trade for the veteran runner or stick with their young core.

The New York Giants lead the NFC East for the first time since 2015, a position that changes the calculus for their front office as the trade deadline approaches. They are currently 3-4, while the Philadelphia Eagles sit at 2-5 after losing five straight games. The Giants could claim the division title if the season ended today, securing the No. 3 seed in the NFC.
The primary factor driving trade rumors is the Eagles' injury crisis. Twenty-five players were on the injury report ahead of their Monday night loss to the Dallas Cowboys. Quarterback Jalen Hurts is out, and running back Saquon Barkley returned from a two-game absence on Monday. He rushed for 62 yards and a touchdown but aggravated his hamstring in the first half.
Head coach John Harbaugh stated it would be "great" to be in a "Saquon Barkley circumstance" where the team has no doubts about its strongest ball carrier. The Giants cut running back Najee Harris following his public criticism of the rotation. In the last game, quarterback J.J. McCarthy led the team in rushing with 26 yards, highlighting the need for a dedicated offensive weapon.
Barkley offers a proven track record. He rushed for 1,000 or more yards in five of his seven full seasons. His 2024 campaign with the Eagles set a record with 2,504 yards during the regular season and playoffs. As a three-time Pro Bowler and Super Bowl champion, he provides immediate veteran production.
However, the financial and strategic costs present significant hurdles. Barkley is 29 years old, an age that raises concerns about his remaining career longevity for a running back. The Giants previously declined to sign him in 2024 when he entered free agency, leading to his move to Philadelphia. Acquiring him now would require a substantial price tag for a player whose prime may be winding down.
New York already possesses a young talent in running back Cam Skattebo. Skattebo has 129 carries for 530 yards and eight touchdowns in nine games with quarterback Jaxson Dart. The duo has shown chemistry during their limited healthy stretches. Trading Skattebo for Barkley could reset the Giants' offensive timeline, forcing another search for a top-tier back within a few seasons.
The Giants also have recent experience with reuniting veterans. They signed wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. earlier this season but cut him after three games. He recorded no receptions in just 20 total snaps. The nostalgia factor wore off quickly, suggesting that emotional connections do not always translate to on-field success.
The Eagles view Barkley as a rare inter-divisional asset and may be reluctant to send him to a direct rival. If the Giants acquire him, they risk overpaying for short-term impact. If they hold him, the Eagles lose another consistent offensive playmaker in an already difficult season.
