Topeka police arrested Adam Schwegman on Wednesday, Oct. 28, after he stabbed three people and broke into two homes.

Schwegman, who was not identified by name in the initial release but is now known as the suspect, was booked on 16 charges. These include aggravated battery and rape. A judge set his bond at $3 million during his first court appearance on Thursday, Oct. 29.

Police say the spree began an hour before Schwegman was spotted at Ward Meade Park. Officers stated that Schwegman stabbed two individuals along S.W. Fillmore Avenue. His booking paperwork also lists an allegation of rape at that same address.

After the stabbings on S.W. Fillmore, Schwegman moved up the same road. Police say he broke into two different houses. Four children were inside one of the homes, including a four-month-old infant. Officials confirmed that none of the children were hurt.

Schwegman continued his movement through the neighborhood and stabbed a third victim on a nearby street. He then approached a 70-year-old woman at Ward Meade Park and attacked her.

Ron Hubbard, a bystander, was with a friend at the park when he noticed Schwegman. Hubbard said he and his friend had been in the area and recognized the man as the one who had been acting strangely earlier.

Hubbard described the moment he intervened. He said he stepped out, extended his leg to trip Schwegman, and caused the man to fall into the grass. The knife Schwegman was carrying landed in the grass.

Hubbard kicked the knife to the sidewalk while his friend held Schwegman. Although Schwegman initially managed to get away, police located and arrested him shortly after.

Hubbard told reporters he was glad to step in to stop the incident. He said he wished they had been able to intervene before the earlier stabbings occurred.

Schwegman remains in custody as the Topeka Police Department continues its investigation into the series of attacks.
