Adam Schwegman is facing a $3 million bond after Topeka police charged him with 16 offenses related to a violent incident that spanned several blocks and left three people with stab wounds. The charges include aggravated battery and rape, stemming from events that began on the evening of Wednesday, Oct. 28.
Police records indicate Schwegman first attacked two individuals along S.W. Fillmore. An hour later, he moved further up the same road and forced his way into two separate homes. Four children were inside one of those residences, the youngest being four months old. Authorities confirmed that the children were not injured during the break-in.
The suspect continued his path, stabbing a third victim on a nearby street. The sequence of events concluded at Ward Meade Park, where Schwegman attacked a 70-year-old woman. He fled the park on foot, drawing the attention of bystanders who had previously noticed his erratic behavior.
Ron Hubbard, who was with a friend at the time, identified Schwegman as a "strange guy" who had been lingering near the park. Hubbard recalled seeing a television show where a delivery driver stopped a suspect in a similar manner. He decided to act on that memory.
"I decided to step in, throw my leg out, trip him and he landed over here in the grass, and the knife fell in the grass," Hubbard said. He kicked the blade toward the sidewalk while his companion held Schwegman down. The suspect escaped the pair, but police apprehended him shortly after.
Schwegman appeared in court on Thursday, Oct. 29, for his first hearing. The judge set the total bond amount at $3 million. Hubbard, who said he was glad to intervene, expressed a wish that the confrontation had happened earlier in the night to prevent the initial injuries.
The 16 counts filed against Schwegman cover the attacks on the three victims and the alleged rape at the S.W. Fillmore address. The case remains open as prosecutors review the evidence from the park and the two homes he entered.
