Florida State University terminated head coach Mike Norvell on Sunday, triggering a financial obligation of approximately $47 million. The decision followed a 36-24 home defeat to Clemson on Saturday, in which the Seminoles were favored by five points.
President Richard McCullough announced the dismissal at an evening news conference. He named Rick Stockstill, the team's director of offensive scouting, as the interim head coach. Stockstill previously led Middle Tennessee State from 2006 to 2023 and played quarterback for Florida State from 1977 to 1981.
McCullough stated that the move represents a new beginning for the program. He emphasized the need to support the student athletes and advance the department's strategy. The administration also hired Daniel Parker of Parker & Associates to conduct simultaneous searches for a permanent head coach and athletic director.
The coaching change follows a downturn in performance since the 2024 season. Norvell compiled a 10-22 record during that period. The team has lost its last three matchups against primary rivals Miami, Florida, and Clemson. Florida State holds a 1-5 record against Power 4 opponents this fall.
Norvell had a strong start to his tenure in Tallahassee. He won 19 consecutive games from the middle of the 2022 season through an ACC championship in December 2023. The squad achieved a 13-0 record that year but missed the College Football Playoff. Since 2020, his conference record stands at 24-30.
The buyout amount equals 85% of his remaining salary through the 2031 season. Norvell was scheduled to earn $10.3 million in 2026. The contract includes offset language that may reduce the cost if he secures another position. Additional payments for his assistants could push the total expense beyond $50 million.
Interim athletic director Bruce Warwick said Norvell learned of the decision and contacted his wife, Maria. He then addressed the team in a scheduled meeting. Warwick described Norvell as passionate and emotional during the conversation. He noted that Norvell expressed a desire to see the players succeed and would continue to follow the team.
Florida State, now 3-5 overall and 1-4 in conference play, travels to Boston College on Saturday. The Eagles enter the game with a 4-4 record and a 2-3 conference mark.
