Three Alaska high school seniors received the nation's top academic honor this week.
The White House Commission on Presidential Scholars selected the 2026 class after a rigorous review of candidates. Michelle E. Xu of Anchorage, Liam B. Wade of North Pole, and Sara Elizabeth DeVolld of Soldotna made the cut. Xu attends Cranbrook Kingswood Upper School in Anchorage, while Wade is a student at North Pole High School. DeVolld is enrolled in the Soldotna Connections Home School Program.
The program recognizes outstanding achievement, leadership, and community service. The commission evaluates character and contributions to schools and communities during its selection process. These honors stand as one of the highest distinctions available to graduating high school seniors in the United States.
The U.S. Presidential Scholars Program has operated since 1964. It honors distinguished students from every state, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, and U.S. citizens living abroad. The selection also includes at-large scholars and students with outstanding accomplishments in visual and performing arts and career and technical education.
Commissioner Deena Bishop of the Alaska Department of Education and Early Development praised the three recipients. She stated that they represent the best of Alaska's young people. Bishop noted that their accomplishments reflect years of hard work and dedication. The department announced the news on November 4, 2026.
